From Future Ready to Life Ready

The e2L team is no stranger to Future Ready learning. But as our mission progresses, we find there’s sometimes a need to adjust our thought process, and thus change the terminology we use for that process.

For this reason, we’re proud to announce that we are changing “Future Ready Skills” to “Life Ready Skills.”

Why the change?

It’s clear that educators see value in Life Ready Skills.

In fact, nearly every district and industry partner coins their own phrase for these essential skills. We’ve called them by different names and heard them called Future Ready Skills, soft skills, 21st century skills, Key Competencies, and more.

While these terms explain essential parts of Life Ready Skills, we have struggled over the years with determining the “best” descriptor.

We have this conversation so often internally and externally that we have gotten lots of feedback. We have quite a large survey pool to fuel our decisions, which are outlined below.

While “21st century skills” emphasizes the need for these skills in a modern economy, it doesn’t accurately capture how these skills affect learners’ everyday lives. As many people point out, we’re almost 20 years into the 21st century and today’s pre-kindergartners will actually live in the 22nd century.

The phrase “Future Ready Skills” is more on target, but it still doesn’t show the irreplaceable need for these skills for success today. Life isn’t something that happens in the future; it’s happening now and there’s a need for skills to manage it on a daily basis.

In our work with district stakeholders on creating the ideal learning experience, we hear a consistent cry from parents, learners, and educators to provide learners with an education that develops skills that prepare them for the “real world.”

The message is clear: educators need to be well-versed in these skills to properly transfer them to learners through authentic, relevant learning experiences. Therefore, we want to use a term that applies to adults and students alike. We are all learning and growing our skills every day as the context around us changes and demands more of us to contribute meaningfully to this changing world.

Life Ready Skills is the most appropriate term for these skills.

It doesn’t emphasize being ready for the future; it means you are ready to take on life right now, as well as any challenges the future may hold.

No matter where you are in your life, whether you are a Kindergartener or a seasoned educator, you need to be Life Ready.
