No matter what field one is in and even in personal relationships, providing feedback and learning or developing new habits is an important and delicate process. These conversations should always result in growth. This can be difficult, however, without a formal structure to create consistency and positive outcomes.
engage2learn (e2L) has mastered the art of the conversation with eGROWE, a formal structure used when coaching educators. These structured conversations have years of data proving it works. Within the organization, the simple acronym eGROWE is used in every coaching conversation by all coaches and on all levels. Even the internal operations of e2L staff is developed with eGROWE.
The first “e” in the acronym stands for evidence and is how each conversation starts. By considering evidence at the start of the conversation, both coach and coachee are able to contemplate upon the effectiveness of efforts the coachee has implemented aligned to best practices. If a district is implementing a framework, there is also some conversation about the number of times a teacher was able to travel through the framework, per coaching visit, and the number of days allotted and completed per coaching session.
The “G” in the acronym stands for goal, and here, coachees can zoom in on the Best Practices (BPs) where the desire is to see improvement. For non-teachers, BPs are replaced by executive standards.
The “R” represents a reality which flows so seamlessly when transitioning from one goal to the next. Here, the coachee reflects on their current efforts and identifies areas of improvement by taking a self-assessment which helps both parties identify gaps and areas in need of coachee growth and focus.
After reflecting with the first three letters, the “O” is where both the coach and coachee identify possible options that could help the coachee meet goals and change or improve upon reality.
After the brainstorming session, the “W” stands for will statement. The coachee is provided some autonomy to choose what options are seen as more beneficial to success. Identifying a date that indicates a deadline for implementation, the agreement is made by checking a box and solidifying the will to commit to the option.
The final “E” in the eGROWE stands for evidence and is where the coachee decides on the best way to share the results during the next session. Otherwise known as artifacts, this evidence is decided upon by the coachee and can range from a tangible document to a video or picture.
Each eGROWE conversation provides the coachee an opportunity to receive feedback and grow with each session. It also provides a safe structure in which to offer helpful feedback.
