According to the National Education Association (NEA), multilingual learners (MLLs) are the US’ fastest-growing student group, currently making up 10% of K-12 students and predicted to grow to 1 out of every 4 students by 2025.
Across the Providence Public School District (PPSD) in Rhode Island’s capital, MLLs currently make up 31% of the student population. With this larger-than-average MLL population, the district partnered with engage2learn (e2L) to provide comprehensive, job-embedded coaching support for hundreds of PPSD teachers, focusing on instructional best practices for MLLs.
To measure the impact of e2L's competency-based coaching on MLL outcomes, we turned to third-party evaluator Learning Experience Design (LXD) Research to analyze educator growth data and student WIDA ACCESS scores from the 2020-2021, 2021-2022, and 2022-2023 school years.
LXD's research ultimately shows that educators who receive e2L coaching and earn badges/microcredentials in instructional best practices and competencies have a statistically significant impact on MLL student WIDA ACCESS scores for first through fifth graders – meeting the standard for ESSA Level 2 Moderate Evidence.
