The evidence · ESSA

Coaching with public ESSA evidence.

engage2learn’s coaching carries ESSA Tier 2 / Tier 3 evidence. In an independent study by LXD Research & Consulting, students of teachers who mastered four or more coached practices were significantly more likely to meet their math and reading growth targets.

The four tiers

ESSA sorts evidence into four tiers. Climb them one rung at a time.

The Every Student Succeeds Act ranks an intervention by the strength of the study behind it. The higher the rung, the more rigorous the design.

  1. Tier 4 · Demonstrates a rationale

A logic model, grounded in research.

The foot of the ladder: a well-specified rationale that an approach should work, with efforts under way to study its effect. Most programs can reach it.

  2. Tier 3 · Promising evidence

    A correlational study, with controls.

A well-designed and well-implemented correlational study, with statistical controls for selection bias, showing a significant positive effect on student outcomes.

  3. Tier 2 · Moderate evidence

    A quasi-experimental study.

A well-designed and well-implemented quasi-experimental study, comparing students who received the intervention with similar students who did not, showing a significant positive effect.

  4. Tier 1 · Strong evidence

    An experimental study.

The top rung: a well-designed and well-implemented randomized controlled trial showing a significant positive effect on student outcomes.

  5. Where engage2learn sits

Coaching with Tier 2 / Tier 3 evidence.

engage2learn’s coaching carries ESSA Tier 2 / Tier 3 evidence, from efficacy studies by an independent evaluator, LXD Research & Consulting. That is what makes a coaching purchase defensible.

What this means for your funding

Fundable, defensible, and ready for review.

A district committee asks three questions of any purchase. ESSA evidence answers the second, and helps with the first.

  1. 01

    Fundable

ESSA Tier 2 and 3 evidence qualifies a coaching purchase for Title I and Title II funds. Title II-A is the most common source for professional development.

  2. 02

    Defensible

Evidence from an independent evaluator stands up to procurement scrutiny, at the board table and in an audit.

  3. 03

    Ready for review

We send the evidence ahead of your board meeting or review, so the people who approve the purchase see it first.
