Performance Improvement · Generation Ready

Generation Ready Literacy UpskillingLiteracy coaching that strengthens the curriculum you already own.

A Science of Reading mandate, a new curriculum, flat scores. The materials are rarely the problem. We start with a diagnostic meeting and a walk through your schools, then coach teachers and coaches in reading and writing across all five pillars of reading, from elementary classrooms through adolescent literacy.

A continuous cycle of improvement

One turn of the cycle, across all five pillars.

Scroll through one turn of the cycle and watch the five pillars of reading rise toward the goals set for them.

  1. Needs assessment

Start by looking, before recommending anything.

A diagnostic meeting with your key people, then a full walk through your schools. No recommendation comes before we have seen the classrooms.

  2. Goal setting

Goals set together, pillar by pillar.

With your leaders, we set out the essential elements of teaching and assessing reading and writing, then agree on goals for each part of reading, grounded in what the walk-through and the data show.

  3. Coaching

Coaching in classrooms, workshops by grade level.

On-site coaching beside teachers, meetings and grade-level workshops develop strategic readers and writers through structured literacy, while meeting the cultural, linguistic, social and emotional needs of every student.

  4. Support

Your materials, your data, your coaches.

Teachers learn to use your high-quality instructional materials well with every student, and to read the data to meet each one’s needs. Your instructional coaches build the content and grade-level knowledge to carry the work.

  5. Revision

Revise, and keep the cycle turning.

The plan is revised from what the outcomes show, and the cycle of improvement continues: needs assessment, goal setting, coaching, support and revision.

Where the coaching reaches

From first sounds to high school texts.

Elementary and adolescent literacy each get support built for them, from kindergarten through grade 12.

K–5

Elementary literacy

Strategic readers and writers through structured literacy and all five pillars of reading, with on-site coaching and grade-level workshops.

K–5

Coaching the coach

Your instructional coaches build the content and grade-level knowledge to lead the work.

Grade 6–12

Adolescent literacy

An individualized action plan that builds on, rather than replaces, the programs already in use, with literacy taught across the disciplines.

Grade 6–12

A tiered approach

Comprehensive assessment and data analysis, with reading interventions grounded in research for students who need more.

Success for every student: a tiered approach

Identify, develop, engage, apply, build.

For adolescent readers, the work ensures that teachers in every subject can do five things, starting with knowing exactly what each student needs.

  1. Identify

    Find what each student needs.

Comprehensive assessment and data analysis identify the specific needs of each student in understanding and decoding complex texts. Tiered intervention, with reading interventions that have research behind them, supports the students who need more.

  2. Develop

    Teach comprehension in every subject.

Teachers develop the ability to teach reading comprehension strategies explicitly, aligned to the literacy demands of their own content area.

  3. Engage

Bring every adolescent to complex texts.

Teachers engage and motivate all students in tackling complex, informational texts, by raising interest and relevance and building academic discussion.

  4. Apply

Design tasks from the state standards.

Teachers apply a growing knowledge of state literacy standards to design tasks, and a ladder of instruction that helps students reach them.

  5. Build

    Vocabulary instruction that reaches everyone.

Teachers build their capacity to engage all students in research-aligned vocabulary instruction.

FAQ

Questions leaders ask.

Do we need to change our curriculum to work with you?

No. Generation Ready Literacy Upskilling strengthens the curriculum you already own. It helps teachers use your high-quality instructional materials with every student, alongside data analysis and coaching, rather than replacing them.

What does the literacy coaching cover?

It covers reading and writing, across all five pillars of reading, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, through explicit, systematic instruction grounded in the Science of Reading, from elementary literacy through adolescent literacy.

Does the coaching reach older, struggling readers?

Yes. Adolescent literacy support builds on, rather than replaces, the programs you already use, with an individualized action plan. A tiered approach uses comprehensive assessment and data analysis to identify where students need support, and reading interventions with research behind them to give it.

What changes for secondary teachers outside English?

Literacy becomes part of every subject. Teachers learn to teach reading comprehension strategies aligned to their own content area, engage students with complex informational texts, design tasks from the state literacy standards and teach vocabulary to every student.

How does literacy coaching start?

It starts with a diagnostic meeting with your key people and a walk through your schools, before any recommendations. Goals are then set together, and coaching begins in classrooms.

We already have literacy coaches. How does this help them?

Generation Ready Literacy Upskilling includes coaching the coach: your instructional coaches build the content and grade-level knowledge to lead the work themselves.
