Who we serve · Mathematics

Students who can explain their thinking.

Getting the right answer isn’t the same as understanding the math. engage2learn coaches alongside math teachers as they build reasoning and student talk into every lesson, through co-planning, modeling and reflection, and measures the change in GroweLab.

Two answers, one problem

Both answers are right, and one of them shows understanding.

A student who can explain why ¾ is greater than ⅔ can handle the next problem that looks different. Getting a classroom there is a teaching practice, and it can be coached.

Just the answer

Which is greater, ¾ or ⅔?

¾

Right. But how did they know?

Explains the thinking

Which is greater, ¾ or ⅔?

  1. Both fractions are one piece away from a whole.
  2. ¾ is missing ¼. ⅔ is missing ⅓.
  3. ¼ is smaller than ⅓, so ¾ is closer to 1.

  1. 01 Co-plan

    Plan around one rich problem.

Coach and teacher unpack the unit and choose the task, the questions and the sentence stems that will get students talking.

  2. 02 Model

See it in your own classroom.

The coach leads the routine with the teacher’s students, so the teacher sees it work with the class they actually have.

  3. 03 Reflect

    Read what students said.

Together they look at student talk and work, decide the next step, and log it in GroweLab.

From the outcome to the skill behind it

Five rungs down, from math scores to student reasoning.

Scroll down the ladder: from the outcome you see to what produces it, and back up to how you’ll know it moved.

  1. The outcome you see

Students who can follow the steps, and stall on anything new.

Procedures are drilled and the unit test goes fine. Then a problem looks different, and students don’t know where to start.

  2. What the diagnosis looks at

How much students talk and reason in math class.

Coaches set goals with school leaders and look at the data together: who is doing the thinking, how students explain their work, and how groups form.

  3. The plan

    Your materials, taught for understanding.

Unit unpacking and co-planning turn the curriculum you have into lessons built around discourse, reasoning and writing in math.

  4. The coaching

    Co-plan, model, reflect.

Generation Ready Math Upskilling works alongside teachers through all three, with specialists for elementary, middle and high school, aligned to NCTM’s eight high-leverage teaching practices. HQIM Implementation supports teachers on their materials.

  5. How you’ll know it moved

    Practice measured as it happens.

Coaching cycles and walkthroughs are logged in GroweLab, so you can see discourse and reasoning growing in classrooms before the test does.

engage2learn’s coaching carries ESSA Tier 2 / Tier 3 evidence.

FAQ

Questions leaders ask.

How does coaching help students explain their thinking?

Coaches help teachers build routines for student talk, reasoning and writing in math. They co-plan lessons around a rich problem, model the routine in the teacher’s own classroom, and reflect together on what students said and did.

Does the coaching work with our math materials?

Yes. The coaching supports the curriculum you already have, from selection through full implementation, with live modeling, co-planning and unit unpacking. It strengthens how teachers use the materials rather than adding a new program.

How is progress measured in GroweLab?

Coaching cycles and walkthroughs are logged in GroweLab as they happen. Leaders see which practices are growing in which classrooms, so progress shows up well before spring scores.

What results have partners seen in math?

Students of engage2learn-coached teachers showed two times the growth in math and science scores in first-year partner results. ESSA efficacy studies found gains of 27 points in math in grades 6 to 8.
