engage2learn ESSA Level 2 Grade 6-8 Efficacy Study for 2022-2023

Measuring the Impact of Educator Competency on Math & Science Scores in Grades 6-8

Report Sections:

Study Description

engage2learn (e2L) provides an in-person and virtual coaching system that helps educators develop proficiency in implementing core instructional competencies. Learning Experience Design (LXD) Research, a third-party independent evaluator, was hired to analyze data collected during the 2022-2023 school year. The goal was to measure how educator growth in competencies contributed to the faculty's growing use of instructional best practices, and if those best practices impacted student outcomes & school climate.

This well-designed, correlational study suggests that educator growth in e2L competencies meets the standard for ESSA Level 2 Moderate Evidence by having a statistically significant impact on math and science achievement and school climate for students in grades 6-8.

Program Overview

engage2learn (e2L) partnered with the district to provide coaching for teachers, instructional lead teachers, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and office staff. Teachers were coached on the instructional best practices and worked with their e2L Coach to design their own paths toward standards mastery within the district-selected competencies. As teachers demonstrate evidence of practice of each competency, they earn microcredentials/badges to recognize their growth.

This study compared five schools that had cohorts of educators who were coached by e2L with five schools who were not coached by e2L. Teachers have been gaining new badges and building mastery as a result of e2L coaching since 2020.

Key Findings/Results

Grade 6-8 Student Growth in Math

Math is indexed by the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) at the end of each school year. We compared students from schools with teachers who received coaching from e2L and earned competency badges to students at schools with teachers who did not. The results provide evidence that students of high-engagement engage2learn teachers had higher math scores than students of comparison schools

Stats Citation (Grade 7): t(526) = 4.8, p < .001 Cohen's d effect size = .37

Stats Citation (Grade 8): t(933) = 2.1, p = .03 Cohen's d effect size = .13

Grade 7-8 Student Growth in Science

Science is indexed by the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) at the end of each school year. The following results provide evidence that educators who were coached by engage2Learn have significant and higher impacts on student science scores than educators in comparison schools who did not get coaching.

Note: Grade 6 students did not take the STAAR Science test.

Teacher-Reported School Climate Survey Results

Teacher-Reported School Climate is indexed by the percentage of positive responses given in a survey of teachers across the district. We compared the average responses across the 10 participating schools (5 e2L schools and 5 comparison schools). Despite similar scores before the pandemic, all five schools with e2L coaching reported a more positive school climate than the five comparison schools.
