Success story · Arlington ISD · Texas

Creating and scaling a district-wide cultural shift.

Arlington ISD coached every teacher and leader on competencies grounded in research, then tied professional growth data to student outcomes, school by school, until the culture changed across the district.

The engage2learn coaching has been an absolutely critical piece to improving the implementation of our strategies and the things we are trying to accomplish.

Chapter 01 · Before

Nearly 60,000 students, and outcomes that depended on the school

Arlington ISD serves nearly 60,000 students, 72% of them economically disadvantaged. Disparities in income and opportunity were producing very different student outcomes from one school to the next, a real barrier to equity inside one district.

Chapter 02 · What we did

Coaching for every teacher and leader, measured against outcomes

Under Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, the district set out to shift its culture a piece at a time, until innovation reached every school. The method was individualized coaching for all of its teachers and leaders on competencies grounded in research and aligned to best practices.

The district then correlated that professional growth data with student outcomes data, so it could see which growth in practice was moving results for students, academically and beyond school.

Chapter 03 · What changed

Better student outcomes, and teachers who stayed

Over a multi-year partnership, the district saw student outcomes and teacher retention rise. An independent study of Arlington ISD’s coaching from 2017 to 2021 later found that coached teachers were significantly more likely to stay in their roles (see the teacher retention study).
