Success story · El Segundo Unified School District · California

AI-aligned competencies for every educator.

El Segundo Unified co-designed the LEARN Competencies and Progressions with engage2learn: a district-wide roadmap for educators to use AI responsibly and effectively, built on the district’s graduate profile.

Chapter 01 · Before

A graduate profile with one piece missing

El Segundo Unified serves about 3,500 students in five schools in Southern California, with a 99% graduation rate and a culture of innovation. Its LEARN Graduate Profile already defined what graduates need in a tech-driven world.

What was missing was a clear, scalable framework to guide educators in bringing AI into classroom instruction responsibly and effectively, in line with the district’s values of equity, ethics and innovation.

Chapter 02 · What we did

A design team from across the district

engage2learn facilitated a collaborative design process with a diverse team of El Segundo educators and leaders, from special education, fine arts and the core content areas. Together they wrote the AI/Grad Profile: LEARN Competencies and Progressions.

The progression is grounded in research and asset-oriented. It is aligned to the five pillars of the LEARN profile (Literacy, Ethics, Application, Relevance and Navigation), with clear indicators of growth at emerging, applying and integrating levels.

Chapter 03 · What changed

A roadmap other districts can follow

El Segundo now has a district-wide roadmap that equips educators to use AI to personalize learning, promote ethical digital citizenship, build global collaboration and strengthen student communication. The competencies guide the district’s professional learning, aligned with its strategic goals and graduate profile, and the district plans ongoing support and training to follow.
