Research study · Large urban district · Texas

Educator competency raised math and science scores in grades 6-8.

An independent ESSA Level 2 study by LXD Research found that educator growth in engage2learn competencies had a statistically significant impact on math and science achievement in grades 6-8, 2021-2022.

Chapter 01 · Before

Middle school math and science in a large urban district

A large urban district in Texas wanted stronger results in middle school math and science for its students, most of them economically disadvantaged. It partnered with engage2learn to coach its educators, and asked whether their growth in core competencies would show up in student achievement.

Chapter 02 · What we did

Coaching for every role, five schools against five

engage2learn coached teachers, instructional lead teachers, assistant principals, instructional coaches and office staff. Teachers designed their own path to mastery of the district’s chosen competencies with their coach, earning strand and standard badges as they showed evidence of practice, beginning in 2020-21.

Learning Experience Design (LXD) Research, a third-party evaluator, compared 2021-2022 NWEA MAP Growth and STAAR results for 1,353 students of 110 teachers at five coached schools with five comparison schools without coaching.

Chapter 03 · What changed

Higher growth in math and science

Students of badge-earning teachers made significantly larger gains in math and science on NWEA MAP from fall 2021 to spring 2022, and more of them reached grade level on STAAR, than students at the comparison schools.

The well-designed correlational study meets the standard for ESSA Level 2 moderate evidence.
