Success story · Mesquite ISD · Texas

Literacy and a culture of ownership, built together.

Mesquite ISD designed its own Literacy Framework with engage2learn, then coached leaders, teachers and coaches in three cohorts over three years, as the district moved from compliance to ownership.

What we’re doing is creating a model that centers around building capacity of teachers, while allowing the teachers to be the owner and innovator of what needs to occur in the classroom.

Chapter 01 · Before

Literacy and innovation, in the same sentence

Mesquite ISD, east of Dallas, serves nearly 40,000 students in 50 schools. When it partnered with engage2learn in 2015, its superintendent, Dr. David Vroonland, wanted two things at once: stronger literacy, and a district culture that moved from compliance to ownership and innovation.

Chapter 02 · What we did

A framework the district designed, then coaching to carry it

engage2learn facilitated strategic sessions in which district stakeholders designed the Mesquite ISD Literacy Framework, and every elementary school team then designed its own plan for innovation and literacy best practices within it.

The district backed the shift with engage2learn coaching for leaders, teachers and coaches, in three cohorts over three years.

Chapter 03 · What changed

More readers on grade level, from the first year

Results showed in the first year. Second graders moving to third grade in coached classrooms read on grade level at higher rates than those in classrooms without coaching, and students who entered a grade at Tier 2 or Tier 3 moved to Tier 1 on the strength of differentiated Tier 1 instruction.

87.19%
of second graders in coached classrooms reading on grade level, against 78.13% in classrooms without coaching
268
kindergarteners who entered at risk left for first grade on track, 2017
Chapter 04 · In their words

In their words.

“What we’re doing is creating a model that centers around building capacity of teachers, while allowing the teachers to be the owner and innovator of what needs to occur in the classroom.”
