Why are microcredentials and badges so valuable to school leaders?

Growth you can see, certify and connect to results.

  1. 01

    Measure and reward skill proficiency

Without recognizing, rewarding and documenting a progression of growth, what do teachers have to show for their hard work? Microcredentials and badges help leaders cultivate a culture of engagement and growth by recognizing their teachers’ achievements.

  2. 02

    Certify high-fidelity implementation

Session attendance or course completion does not mean new strategies are being implemented in the classroom. Badges in GroweLab are based on documented evidence of practice in competencies shown to improve student outcomes.

  3. 03

    Correlate growth to improved outcomes

Connect badging data in GroweLab to your imported student achievement data and see which competencies and skills are driving improved results.

In their words

Morale, confidence and new ideas.

I saw a huge improvement in morale and positivity and climate and culture. I saw teachers become more confident in their ability in their classrooms. I saw veteran teachers embrace new ideas and different ways to do things.

Badges represent evidence of implementation.

Coaches use pictures, videos and documented lesson plans provided by their coachees as evidence of classroom implementation to certify fidelity and increased proficiency. Badges in GroweLab are awarded only when evidence of practice has been reviewed and approved by a coach.

Create custom badges unique to you.

With custom competencies aligned to your school or district’s priorities, administrators can also design and award badges that signify growth on those competencies.

Two types of competency growth recognition

Earned on evidence of practice, not session attendance.

Strand badge

The first tier of badges represents growth on a particular strand within a competency. Strand badges are quick wins that give educators early recognition of growth toward higher levels of proficiency.

Microcredential

A microcredential is awarded when a teacher or staff member has documented evidence of practice, reviewed by their coach, aligned to the proficiency level of a whole competency.

In their words

Gratifying to be recognized.

It provides me the opportunity to reflect on my work so I can continue to grow. It’s gratifying to receive and be recognized with badges!

Where this sits in the cycle

Growth certified, then counted.

Badges in GroweLab run through every step of the cycle. Each one is evidence of practice a coach has reviewed, so a district’s growth data says what changed in classrooms.

FAQ

Questions leaders ask.

How do educators earn badges in GroweLab?

Educators earn badges by documenting growth with evidence. As they implement new strategies and skills, they capture evidence and upload it to GroweLab; when their coach reviews and approves it, they receive credit toward the next badge, awarded at benchmarks of proficiency the coach has reviewed.

How do educators earn microcredentials?

A microcredential is earned the same way as a badge, with one difference: the educator provides evidence of implementation demonstrating proficiency for each strand of the competency. Microcredentials mark high-fidelity implementation aligned to the levels of proficiency in each competency.

What is the difference between a badge and a microcredential?

A microcredential represents a deeper level of implementation across an entire competency, while a strand badge recognizes growth on a single strand within it. Both are demonstrated with evidence and reviewed by a coach.

Are adults really motivated by earning badges?

Yes. "I’m working hard for the badges!" engage2learn has issued competency badges to teachers, instructional coaches, principals, operations staff and many others for years, and educators love feeling supported, encouraged and recognized for their growth.

Does GroweLab report on badges and microcredentials?

Yes. GroweLab turns badges and microcredentials into growth-based reports that help school and district leaders monitor progress toward high-level goals and spot growth gaps and trends across the district.

How do leaders use badges with their staff?

Partner districts celebrate badge achievements in staff meetings, print badge stickers for classroom doors, set school-wide badge goals with a "badge thermometer" in the staff lounge, connect badges to pay incentives and evaluations, and use competency reports to find staff who need more support.

Do educators have to earn a badge to be celebrated?

No. GroweLab includes a celebration system that lets coaches and leaders recognize any staff achievement at any time, and supports peer celebrations so teachers and staff can encourage each other too.
