Growth in competencies is key to growing your team’s skills

Four benefits of the competency-based approach.

Competency-based professional learning allows teachers, and staff in any role or level of seniority, to advance on their ability to implement the skills they need to be effective.

  1. 01

    Clarity of expectations

A clear understanding of the skills needed to be effective in a role lets teachers, coaches, school leaders and others focus on improving daily practice.

  2. 02

    Flexibility and relevance

Teachers and staff progress at their own pace on the skills most relevant to their needs, which keeps them engaged and motivated.

  3. 03

    More effectiveness and efficacy

As your team gains new skills at deeper levels of expertise, they become more effective at your district’s goals and priorities.

  4. 04

    Measurable growth

Instead of completion or attendance metrics, competencies let leaders quantify professional growth and correlate it to learner data, showing its impact on student achievement.

Four components of competency-based educator growth

Scaffolded standards, ownership, evidence and recognition.

01

Scaffolded standards

Scaffolding your professional learning standards lets staff see what the progression of proficiency looks like in any role, so every person starts at their current level of experience and progresses to deeper levels of implementation.

02

Autonomy and ownership

Staff choose and set growth goals on competencies based on self-reflection on their daily practice. That autonomy gives your team more ownership of, and involvement in, the learning process.

03

Evidence of practice

Professional learning should lead to real, tangible growth, which happens when staff bring what they are learning into the classroom or job role. GroweLab lets staff collect and document evidence of practice, including classroom video, in a growth portfolio their coach or supervisor reviews and verifies.

04

Recognition of growth

Students receive grades and praise for growth. Shouldn’t educators get something for growing too? With the badging and recognition system in GroweLab, leaders build a positive culture of growth.

Video evidence & feedback

Because coaches can’t be everywhere at once.

Upload a lesson, and get your coach’s feedback.

Teachers record and upload video evidence of classroom implementation into GroweLab and receive asynchronous feedback from their coach directly in their growth portfolio. The coach comments on the clip, and the evidence counts toward the next badge once reviewed.

FAQ

Questions leaders ask.

What is competency-based educator growth?

Competency-based educator growth lets teachers, and staff in any role, advance on their ability to implement the skills they need to be effective, rather than on seat time. Each competency is scaffolded into levels of proficiency, so everyone starts at their current level and grows from there.

Which competencies does GroweLab include?

GroweLab includes a growing library of teacher, instructional coach and leader competencies, among them engage2learn’s best practices, literacy, blended learning, classroom management, English language learners, dual language, special education, educator wellness, coach standards, ISTE standards for coaches and principal and assistant principal rubrics, and districts can create their own.

How does video evidence work?

A teacher uploads a classroom video, a lesson plan or an image into their growth portfolio as evidence of practice. Their coach or supervisor reviews it asynchronously, comments on it, and verifies the growth it shows toward a badge or microcredential.

What if a school has no instructional coaches?

mySmartCoach brings competency-based growth to every teacher without an in-person coach. It is an adaptive, self-guided coaching system, not an online course, that guides teachers through competencies, resources and tools curated by engage2learn’s educators.
